Green fingered Eye care home residents revisit favourite hobbies

Home news

Residents at a care home in Eye have been revisiting their favourite hobbies and sharing their skills with local pupils.

Residents at Care UK’s Hartismere Place, on Castleton Way, have had their spades and trowels at the ready to enjoy gardening with younger generations as part of a nationwide initiative – Long Lost Hobbies

The ‘Long Lost Hobbies’ initiative sees residents in Care UK homes across the country share their favourite hobbies and try new pastimes with younger generations after a national survey found 77% of adults feel technology is the cause of traditional skills being lost, including flower arranging, knitting and woodworking.

Teaming up with the children of Wilby C of E Primary School, residents invited pupils to re-design a special wildlife area in the home’s garden, to encourage them to take an interest in gardening and nature. Residents picked their favourite design, by Jacob, and will be implementing the idea later this year through their gardening club.

Marie Reeve, Home Manager at Hartismere Place, said: “Intergenerational activities are a huge part of life here at Hartismere Place, so it was fantastic to team up with Wilby C of E Primary School to share the hobby of gardening.

“Intergenerational relationships have proven to be incredibly enriching, as they provide an opportunity for younger and older generations to learn from each other. These relationships can be particularly beneficial for older people, as they can offer a sense of purpose and prompt conversations as residents reflect on their younger years.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to the pupils, and we can’t wait for them to come and see the garden when it’s finished!”
