The royal treatment – Kidderminster care home residents celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style

Home news

Residents at a care home in Kidderminster have been enjoying a Platinum Jubilee celebration fit for a queen.

Care UK’s Brook Court, on Oldnall Road, has marked the Queen’s official 70-year milestone by inviting family members for a special jubilee barbeque and hosted a drawing competition with a local school.

Celebrating in true British style, the team at Brook Court went all out to royally decorate the garden with Union Jack flags, bunting and balloons, and the talented Brook Court choir put on a special performance to mark the occasion. Residents and families also enjoyed a special jubilee-themed afternoon tea spread, including finger sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones and a classic Victoria sponge, all specially prepared for the occasion by the home’s chef.

Putting their judging hats on as part of a drawing competition with Foley Park Primary Academy, residents reviewed pupils’ portraits of the Queen and named the winners.

Residents have also spent time reminiscing about their own memories of jubilee celebrations gone by, including 87-year-old Scot Young, who was invited to Buckingham Palace in 2002 to meet the Queen and be presented with the Queen's Award for Enterprise and Innovation for his work founding cleaning company, SYR.

He said: “The Queen has committed her life to serving our country and 70 years – what an achievement! Meeting her was the proudest moment of my life.”

Nirmala Rattu, Home Manager at Brook Court, said: said: “We loved welcoming relatives into the home to enjoy the royal treatment after so long apart!

“The Platinum Jubilee offers the perfect opportunity to get together with loved ones and celebrate the last 70 years of both the Queen, and the wonderful residents, incredible reigns. Many residents have fond memories of celebrating the silver, golden and diamond jubilees with their families and communities, and we were keen to ensure the Platinum Jubilee was no exception!

“It was amazing to have the full Brook Court family back together again after so long. Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, it was a huge success, and we are already planning our next get together!”
