Thame care home invites local community to honour D-Day

A Thame care home is opening its doors to the community for a commemorative ceremony.

On Thursday 6th June, from 11am till 4:30pm, Care UK’s Cuttlebrook Hall on Stock Road, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of D-Day with its very own lamp lighting ceremony.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on 6th June 1944, Care UK is partnering with royal pageant master Bruno Peek, CVO OBE OPR, coordinator of ‘D-Day 80 Lamp Light of Peace’. Along with charities which support the three forces, including the Merchant Navy Association, over 100 Care UK homes will take part in this nationwide tribute.

At Cuttlebrook Hall, the team have been hard at work organising a special commemorative event which will see residents and guests enjoy live entertainment from local performer, Cherly King, who will be performing a number of wartime songs. Guests will also be treated to a classic fish and chip lunch, as well as a delicious afternoon tea specially prepared by the home’s talented catering team.

Eager to share the rich history of the local area, Cuttlebrook Hall is also welcoming Thame Bowls Club and Thame Museum, who will give a talk on the town’s involvement in World War Two, as well as show artifacts and exhibits.

The lamp, which represents the peace which followed the end of World War Two, will be lit at 4:30pm by a local veteran, Wally, who spent a number of years serving in the army.

Wally, said: “I am very honoured to have been chosen to light the lamp of peace and show my respect to my former Regiment who took part in D-Day.”

Alana Corr, Home Manager at Cuttlebrook Hall said: “Here at Cuttlebrook Hall, we’re thrilled to be marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day with the help of the community – and especially delighted to be welcoming Thame Museum, The Royal British Legion, as well as Thame Bowls Club and Wally for the occasion.

“We know this is a very important milestone for residents, and are looking forward to having the opportunity to learn more about this poignant period from the experts at Thame Museum.

“On behalf of the whole team, I’d like to extend our welcome to anyone interested in coming along for what we anticipate will be an informative and enriching afternoon!”
