Surrey care homes invite community to honour VE Day

Four care homes across Surrey are opening their doors to the community to mark 80 years since the end of World War II.

On Thursday 8th May, from 2-4pm, Care UK’s Norfolk House, on Portmore Park Road, Weybridge, is welcoming local people to honour the 80th anniversary of VE Day with its very own 1940s-themed tea party, along with four other care homes across the county.

Celebrations to commemorate VE Day will also be held at the following Care UK homes in Surrey:

  • Stanecroft, Spook Hill, Dorking, from 12pm onwards
  • Whitebourne, Burleigh Road, Frimley, from 12.30pm onwards
  • Echelforde, College Way, Ashford, from 2pm onwards

VE Day was celebrated on 8th May 1945, after Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio that the war in Europe had come to an end. This emotional news sparked celebrations across the country, with many taking to the streets for spontaneous parties.

The teams at all five homes have been hard at work organising their own special commemorative events, which will see residents and guests enjoy delicious food, entertainment and dancing as they embrace the spirit of the 1940s.

At Norfolk House, vintage singer Andy Luke will get everyone’s toes tapping from 2.30pm with songs from the era, including classics from Vera Lynn, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Meanwhile, guests can also join residents for a quintessentially English afternoon tea party, complete with fine china and flowers aplenty.

Sabu Prothasis, Home Manager at Norfolk House, said: “We’re thrilled to be opening our doors to the community to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

“The event is a chance to re-awaken old memories and offers a meaningful way for older people, and those living with dementia, to connect with others and celebrate a momentous event in our history.

“As we approach VE Day, residents have been sharing their cherished stories from wartime Britain – it’s been so inspiring to hear their experiences and learn from one another.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming new and old faces into Norfolk House for a nostalgic and heartwarming day to remember!”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Norfolk House is a purpose-designed care home with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The home provides personalised residential care, short term respite care, expert nursing care and specialist dementia care for older people, including those with physical disabilities.
