A care home worker from Lowestoft is celebrating after being nominated for a prestigious industry honour.
Michelle Norman, Head Housekeeper at Care UK’s Britten Court on Love Road, has been shortlisted in the care housekeeper category at the National Care Awards 2025.
These accolades champion excellence across the care sector, recognising individuals, teams and organisations that go above and beyond to deliver outstanding support.
Michelle, who has worked at Britten Court for 11 years, has played a key role in enhancing residents’ lives, earning appreciation from relatives, residents and colleagues alike.
She holds a Housekeeping Supervisor Level 3 with distinction, and her work recently led the team to win the Team of the year award at the 2024 Hotel Housekeeping Honours.
Michelle said: “I am over the moon at being shortlisted for an award and very proud. I am excited to continue to maintain the high standards within the home.
Leading a team of 12, Michelle takes a person-centred approach to housekeeping, meeting every new resident and their family to learn how they would like their room and belongings arranged. She then works closely with other departments, collaborating with colleagues around activities, decorating the home for themed events and creating opportunities for residents – including those living with dementia – to take part in housekeeping if they wish.
One resident said: “Michelle is a friendly person and an efficient worker and team leader. She is always happy to help with requests if possible. My room is always clean, and my laundry always comes back quickly – nothing has got lost or damaged.
“On themed days in the home, Michelle dresses up to promote the theme in question, but still practically to work safely.”
In addition to supporting residents, Michelle encourages her team to develop professionally, embracing innovation and technology that benefits both residents and staff, such as mobile tagging for clothing and portable steamers for efficient, stress-free cleaning.
She champions environmentally friendly products, creating a fresh, pleasant atmosphere appreciated by residents, visitors and colleagues alike.
Chloe Swarbrick, Home Manager at Britten Court, said: “It’s not just about housekeeping with Michelle. She and her team enhance residents’ lives by engaging with their interests, whether bringing in peonies from home, playing chess or joining in activities. She and her colleagues are as likely to be found singing and dancing as they are wielding a duster!
“Her dedication, creativity and warmth have a transformative impact on everyone at Britten Court, and this recognition is thoroughly deserved – well done, Michelle!”
