Wilmslow care home revs up for Race Against Dementia

A care home in Wilmslow shifted into gear to host a Formula 1-themed dementia café event in support of a dementia charity.

Care UK’s Long Stone Manor, on Manchester Road, welcomed the local community to its dementia café, raising an impressive £475.81 for Race Against Dementia. Care UK then matched the donation, bringing the total to £951.62.

To round off the festivities, the home’s catering team served a selection of homemade cakes, light bites, and prosecco.

As part of the celebrations, residents took a trip to Oulton Park race track for the Historic Gold Cup event. They joined in the excitement of the 75th anniversary of Britain’s first Formula 1 team, British Racing Motors, with a collection of its cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s on display.

Martin Dearden, 88 said: “It was a change of pace for some of the residents at Long Stone Manor on our day out to Oulton Park Race Track. We all had a brilliant day.”

This event was one of a series that saw Care UK homes across the country participating in racing-themed events to raise money for Race Against Dementia – a charity founded by F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart following his wife Helen’s diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia.

The charity raises funds for research into the prevention and treatment of dementia, with the money collected at these events going directly to supporting the organisation’s efforts.

Emma Tillyer, Home Manager at Long Stone Manor, said: “We’re incredibly proud of everyone who joined us for the fundraiser. We are truly grateful to those who donated and helped us raise money for a wonderful cause.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to the team at Oulton Park. Everyone’s effort and enthusiasm made the day a success.”

Long Stone Manor is a state-of-the-art care home that provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care, for up to 60 people. The home has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
