Altrincham care home teams up with nursery for Remembrance Day

A care home in Altrincham has been getting creative with a local nursery to mark Remembrance Day.

Residents and team members from Care UK’s Halecroft Grange on Hale Road, joined forces with children from Broussa Day Nursery to paint poppies using cotton buds.

The young children also presented the residents with special handmade Remembrance Day cards and read aloud a poem in memory of those who have lost their lives in conflicts.

Alma Hepworth, a resident at Halecroft Grange who was involved in the activity, said: “It is always lovely to see the children, visiting their nursery made it extra special. Sharing the meaning of Remembrance Day with the next generation is so important, as they will carry it forward and pass it on to their own children one day.”

Suzanna Sumegi, Home Manager at Halecroft Grange, said: “It was heartwarming to see the residents and children spend time together creating the poppies and remembering those who served.

Arts and crafts have many therapeutic benefits for older people, particularly those living with dementia, by providing a sense of purpose and accomplishment. More importantly, Remembrance Day holds a very special meaning to residents, as many of them may have served in the forces or lived through World War Two and heard stories from their parents or older siblings.

“A big thank you and well done to Broussa Day Nursery for getting stuck in creating the beautiful tributes.’’

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Halecroft Grange, which remains open to potential residents, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
