A York care home hosted its own chess contest with local children.
The event at Care UK’s Chocolate Works, on Bishopthorpe Road, saw 12 children from York Chess Club teach residents how to play the traditional board game, followed by some friendly competition.

The children, aged between 10-18 taught their tips and tricks, while residents shared memories of chess playing in their youth.
One resident, Alan, even went head-to-head with an 18-year-old chess master, Aaron, in a blindfolded chess match which Aaron won.
Resident, Mary, said: “I used to play chess with my children and husband but haven't played in many years. The children reminded me how to play, and we had some great friendly competitions! It was a lovely day."
Judy Wray, Home Manager at Chocolate Works, said: “We had a great time welcoming children from York Chess Club for some friendly competition. It was heartwarming to see the children teaching residents how to play a game that was once a huge part of their youth.
“Intergenerational activities like these not only bring joy and connection but also ensure that residents’ stories and interests continue to be celebrated. It was a fun-filled day for everyone involved.”
Designed to enable residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, while also promoting independence, Chocolate Works incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies, including its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and pub. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
