Crowborough school pupil helps name new nursing home

The competition to name the 74-bed home was open to the school’s 411 pupils and was won by Year 5 pupil Abbie Goldsmith, whose entry has won her a Nintendo DSi. The home’s name will now be Heather View.

The home, near the Cross (formerly the Winston Manor Hotel) is currently under construction and due to open in September next year.  It has been specifically designed for older frail people and those with dementia. To create a more homely and intimate atmosphere, each of the three units will be arranged to provide accommodation for groups of 15 to 16 residents, each group with its own dining and lounge area.

In addition there are some smaller lounges on each floor which can be used by residents on their own or to entertain visitors

“We are committed to providing the very best care and are involved in much of the current research and training into dementia needs:

“People with dementia require the right combination of peace and stimulation. Too much noise at the wrong time can create agitation, which is why we have created lots of quiet and peaceful areas both indoors and in the grounds.

“We will also have lots of activities including a shop, café area, hairdressing salon, library, cinema and a multi activity room and, as in all of our homes, we will use activity based care to enable our residents to continue to do those activities that have been an important part of life for them.  The achievements of our residents are a measure of our own success.”

In Heather View, staff will use their time creatively, working closely with residents to preserve a variety of life skills previously enjoyed at home.
