School children join Priors House for rhyming fun

Home news

It was time to share rhymes at Priors House when local school children joined residents to celebrate National Poetry Day.

Residents at Priors House joined national celebrations and shared their favourite poems around the theme of ‘change.’

Local year seven students from The Kingsley School, were invited to read and share their favourite poetry with residents. The pupils and residents then each performed their own poems, with one resident creating his own poem about every day life at Priors House.

Home manager, Francine Summers, said: “Here at Priors House activity based care is essential in supporting residents to lead fulfilling lives and National Poetry Day was a great example of this.

“It was fantastic to have students from The Kingsley School join us for a day of poetry fun. It was wonderful to see how poetry can bring people from all ages together, everyone enjoyed reading aloud or being read to.

“As well as being calming and encouraging social interaction, poetry can help people to bring back memories from younger years. This can be especially beneficial for those living with dementia and can bring about a tremendous sense of satisfaction when memories are recalled.

“We had a wonderful time celebrating the theme of ‘change’ and sharing favourite poems with the local community, and would like to say a big thank you to the pupils from The Kingsley School who made the day such a success.”
