A wheelie great time! Care home surprises retired chauffer driver with a vintage Rolls Royce trip

Home news

A care home resident had an afternoon ‘fuelled’ with memories from his career as a chauffeur driver, after a surprise visit from his favourite Rolls Royce.

Alec Goy, a 95-year-old resident at Care UK’s Weald Heights, on Bourchier Close, was surprised to find his dream car, a vintage Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, eagerly waiting to take him on a trip around Sevenoaks. After learning about his time spent as a chauffeur driver in the 1950s, the team at Weald Heights put their ideas into gear and planned a surprise afternoon outing.

On the day, Alec, whose favourite car has always been a Rolls Royce, returned to the driver’s seat and learned more about the history of the vehicle from its owner. Making sure his chauffeur skills remained up to service, Alec helped chauffer fellow resident Eve out of the vehicle in true celebrity style, who had been enjoying a relaxing rest in the back seat.

Alec was born on 27th October in 1926. After leaving school, Alec worked in a range of different jobs, including a sailor during the Second World War, and driving instructor, but his favourite career has forever remained a chauffeur driver which he began in his early thirties. During these years, Alec had the honour of chauffeuring many famous names, including Sir Jeremy Raisman, a finance member of the Indian government, and Sir Eric Faulkner, who was the chairman of Lloyds Bank.

Commenting on the day, Alec said: “I was so happy to see the Rolls Royce show up outside Weald Heights. It was great to be back behind the wheel of such a beautiful car and to have the opportunity to wear my chauffer hat again. I loved it!”

Maria Covington, Home Manager at Weald Heights, said: “We were delighted to reunite Alec with his favourite car, a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, and to create a memorable afternoon which fulfilled his passion for motoring while providing an opportunity to reminisce on his time spent as a chauffer driver.

“At Weald Heights, we regularly create thoughtful activities and events that promote positive wellbeing. The whole team look forward to learning more about the wonderful experiences the residents have enjoyed throughout their lives and creating imaginative activities that build on their talents.”
