Reaching new heights – Bromsgrove care home residents take unusual approach to getting fit

Home news

A care home in Bromsgrove has been taking part in an unusual type of exercise to kick start the new year.

Residents at Chandler Court, on Recreation Road, have clipped on their pedometers and taken part in a mountain walking challenge as part of Care UK’s ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative – which aims to encourage residents to get up and active by trying something new.

Throughout the month, residents have walked over 22,000 steps to complete the 10-mile challenge, roughly the distance to reach and return from Snowdon’s summit– which provided the inspiration for the impressive feat. The much-loved Welsh mountain is a popular landmark among residents, many of whom are keen walkers and have themselves reached the top in their younger years.

96-year-old resident, Edna Scothern, said: “I have never had the chance to climb Snowdon before, which is why I loved taking part in the challenge. It has encouraged me to stay active, and I think this is the key to a long and healthy life.”

The ‘Let’s Get Physical’ initiative sees Care UK homes across the country encourage residents to move more by trying something new and exciting – whether that be a seated ballet class, disco yoga or even ice skating.

Vongai Mushinga, Home Manager at Chandler Court, said: “We had a fantastic time taking part in our Snowdon walking challenge here at Chandler Court.

“We are constantly looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead active and fulfilling lives, which is why our walking challenge seemed like the perfect activity.

“Gentle exercise can do wonders for older people by reducing the risks of heart disease. Walking also has the added benefit of encouraging residents to spend time outdoor and connect with the nature around us, which can really boost mental and physical wellbeing. Our lovely garden provided us with the perfect place to stretch our legs and eat up some miles.

“Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, Chandler Court was a hit – we are looking forward continuing the sessions throughout 2022. Who knows, we may attempt a Three Peaks walking challenge in the future!”

As part of the initiative, Care UK has also teamed up with popular 80s fitness star, the Green Goddess, to create a series of bespoke exercise videos for its homes to enjoy. Residents and team members across the country are encouraged to don their best Lycra and neon accessories and take part in the fun new workouts.

Diana Moran, the Green Goddess, said: “I am delighted to support Care UK to encourage residents across the country to get active by trying something new.

“Regardless of age, keeping active is what keeps us young. Whether it’s walking a little further on your everyday stroll, or exercising a little longer, every day brings a new possibility. Even for those less mobile, chair-based exercises can be just as beneficial. Nothing should get in the way of you being the best version of you!”

Chandler Court is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, dementia and nursing care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema, café and hair salon, and there is plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
