Spring has sprung – Sutton Coldfield care home hosts special bulb planting

Home news

Residents at a care home in Sutton Coldfield were joined by a local nursery for some seasonal gardening.

Care UK’s Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road, celebrated St David’s Day by planting bulbs with Seesaws Day Nursery Walmley.

On the day, residents picked up their gardening tools and had an opportunity to teach 12 little helpers, all under the age of five, everything they knew about gardening – all while filling the home’s planters with bulbs to prepare for spring.

Antony Gatley, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, said: “We had a fantastic morning planting bulbs with children at Seesaws Day Nursery Walmley.

“Many residents at the home have a passion for gardening and have fond memories of planting daffodils with their own children for St David’s Day, so this was also a great way to reminisce about these happy moments. Gardening has many benefits for older people too, especially those living with dementia, by encouraging physical activity and time spent outdoors – and having the children join us was a great opportunity for them to share their gardening expertise.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Seesaws Day Nursery for lending us a hand – we look forward to seeing our blossoms.”

Katie Clinton, Nursery Manager at Seesaws Day Nursery Walmley, added: “It was great to see residents and children finally come together to resume intergenerational activities. Watching them and the children form strong friendships is truly priceless, and we’re sure these memories will last a lifetime.”

Mercia Grange is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia, and short-term respite care. The three-storey care home, which features 67 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence.
