Poole care home shortlisted for national award

Home achievement

A care home in Poole is celebrating after being shortlisted in the Care Home Awards 2022.

Care UK’s The Potteries, on York Road, has been shortlisted in the ‘Best for Indoor or Outdoor Communal Spaces’ category, which recognises the teams’ efforts to create communal spaces for everyone at the home.

The Care Home Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in UK care home management, operation and delivery. The winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony in July.

The team at The Potteries has been recognised for their efforts in creating the ‘Lockdown Arms’, their very own pub in the care home, where residents could socialise during the pandemic.

Judges noted the team’s quick response to the coronavirus lockdown, in just two weeks a team of colleagues created the pub, where residents from the same suite could socialise, enjoy music and reminiscence in the company of others.

Residents enjoy themed nights, pub quizzes and karaoke at the ‘pub’. As well as traditional pub grub, with the home’s Head Chef even sourcing an ice crusher machine so residents can enjoy cocktails and mocktails.

Resident Aidan Wall commented: "I've enjoyed the Lockdown Arms. We have sung songs and had fish and chips there. Music is also very important to keep the pub alive. I love to see my friends from other suites there.”

Dedicated to fulfilling lives, the team at The Potteries has also been recognised for their namaste room. Namaste care offers dedicated, uninterrupted time for residents, where they can enjoy quiet one-to-one interaction from skilled carers. This might include a hand or foot massage, music therapy, or themed sensory and movement sessions.

Resident Mavis Griffin commented on the sessions: “I find it very restful; I enjoy the darkness of the room as it makes me feel more relaxed, and it takes me away from everything else for a short time.”

Zita Turner, Home Manager at The Potteries, said: “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted in the ‘Best for Indoor or Outdoor Communal Spaces’ category at this years’ Care Home Awards for our creation of the Lockdown Arms.

“Being shortlisted is testament to the team’s hard work and innovative thinking to ensure every resident leads a happy and fulfilling life. The creation of the pub was a whole team effort and since its opening it has created an extra dimension to home life for many residents. It’s the location of fun themed evenings, karaoke nights, and pub quizzes, and residents love to congregate there of an evening.

“We’d like to wish everyone shortlisted good luck – we have our fingers crossed for the final in July!”

The Potteries is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, in addition to the Namaste room, the care home also boasts its very own cinema and hair salon. There is also plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation. The home has a comprehensive activity programme, offering a mix of themed events and group activities.
