Residents at a Quorn care home flock together for national birdwatch

Home news

Residents at a care home in Quorn had their binoculars at the ready when they took part in this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Residents at Care UK’s Lonsdale Mews, on Farley Way, spent an afternoon observing the many feathered friends visiting the home when they took part in the world’s largest wildlife survey.

Eager to meet more wildlife neighbours, residents also made a trip to Queen’s Park in Loughborough and put their bird spotting skills to the test.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s biggest garden wildlife survey. Every year, over half a million people nationwide take part by counting the birds, as well as other garden species such as badgers and hedgehogs, that they spot in their garden in one hour. This important survey allows the RSPB to monitor species population and trends year to year.

The team also organised for James Wood, a resident’s family member, to deliver an interesting talk where he shared his knowledge on the rare birds he has spotted on his travels.

Keen to encourage their favourite birds to visit the home’s garden, residents have also been creating bird feeders to add to the bird feeding stations scattered around the garden.

Toby Sturgess, Home Manager at Lonsdale Mews, said: “Spending time outside and connecting with nature has great benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing, which is important for older people, and particularly for those living with dementia.

“Birdwatching is a peaceful activity, with vibrant colours and distinctive bird songs providing calming, sensory stimulation. It’s also a hobby which residents can enjoy from the comfort of an armchair, no matter what the weather, thanks to our carefully positioned feeders.

“We were delighted to be part of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch again this year and to be playing a part in this important national survey. It was great to learn more about our wildlife neighbours.”

Lonsdale Mews offers full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite. The home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café. The layout of the building is configured into a series of individual suites, each having a dedicated lounge/dining room to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities.
