Care UK shortlisted in four National Dementia Care Awards

Company news

Three Care UK care homes are celebrating after being shortlisted in four awards at the National Dementia Care Awards.

Broadwater Lodge in Surrey and Cleves Place in Suffolk have each scooped a nomination, with Appleby House, also in Surrey, shortlisted for two awards.

The National Dementia Care Awards are held annually and recognise the very best in dementia care across the sector, culminating in an awards ceremony on Thursday 3 November. The awards pay tribute to the individuals and teams who have demonstrated outstanding performance within their field of work.

Appleby House has been shortlisted for two awards: Best Dementia Care Home and Dementia Care Inspiring Leader, due to the team and the home manager’s commitment to providing personalised care to residents living with dementia.

The home holds regular art sessions for residents, and displays their artwork in the ‘Appleby Tate’ gallery, enabling residents to explore their creativity and feel engaged and empowered. The Appleby House team also organises regular outings to the local area for residents, from pub lunches and walking in the local park, to a visit to a garden centre or a relaxing boat trip. Residents are encouraged to take part in a range of activities that can improve their personal wellbeing.

Shona Bradbury, home manager at Appleby House, said: “We’re delighted to have been recognised as one of the best dementia care homes and as a dementia care inspiring leader. All residents at Appleby House are living with dementia, so the team works really hard to deliver the best care possible to make their lives as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Residents are at the heart of what we do and we take great pride in the level of care we provide.”

A resident at Cleves Place has been shortlisted for Best Resident Contribution at the awards. Ron Wheeler, who is 69 and living with dementia, has been recognised for his contribution to resident and team morale in the home.

When Ron first joined the home, he expressed he’d like to spend his time doing something worthwhile. To support his independence, the Cleves Place team organised a volunteer role at a local YMCA charity shop. Ron soon thrived and began to work with the maintenance team at the home, helping to personalise resident’s rooms. Ron’s new role has significantly improved his wellbeing and the morale of the team around him.

Broadwater Lodge has been nominated for Best Dementia Team, having implemented several measures within the home to improve the livelihood of residents living with dementia. The home has opened a pub exclusively for residents called the ‘The Stumbling Inn’, a salon, and even a sweet shop to spark fond memories and create an enjoyable environment for residents.

Angela Bookham, home manager at Broadwater Lodge, said: “We’re really honoured to have been shortlisted at the National Dementia Care Awards. The team works really hard to deliver the best care for all residents in the home, but for those living with dementia, it is even more important to make their lives as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.”
