Residents and teams at more than 100 of Care UK’s homes are taking part in the national initiative which aims to connect people and enrich the lives of residents, by building on relationships with local people and community groups.
Most of the events will take place on Friday 16 June although some home teams have chosen Saturday 17 June because they want families and those who work during the week to be able to come along.
Every home has planned its own special celebration with input from residents and their friends and families. From afternoon teas and summer fairs, to pop-up bowling alleys and visits from exotic animals, this year’s events are set to be more diverse, interactive and fun than ever before.
Colne View is bringing the taste of America to Halstead with its event, which includes an American style barbecue, drive-in movie theatre and an outdoor bowling alley. While Davers Court in Bury St. Edmunds is taking a trip down memory lane with a 50s and 60s inspired party.
The community near to Ferndown Manor in Dorset is getting into the spirit of Care Home Open Day with a best summer hat competition at, whilst locals in Chelsea are preparing for a day at the beach event as the gardens at Ellesmere House are being transformed for the day.
Both Armstrong House in Gateshead and Caledonian Court in Falkirk, are hosting world cuisine parties to mark the occasion, giving their visitors the opportunity to try delicious dishes from across the globe.
Jubilee House in Godalming is using the day as an opportunity to unveil a new piece of artwork, created by the residents, while residents at Manor Lodge are planting a friendship tree at their event in memory of loved ones.
Sherwood Grange in Kingston has two things to celebrate as the annual event coincides with the home’s first birthday. Home manager Rick Mayne will perform an official cake cutting while visitors can enjoy a day of free family-fun.
The team at Perry Manor in Worcester is inviting local people to take part in fun lawn games at their event on Friday, including giant Jenga and a tin-can alley. Home manager, Katherine Matthews, explained why Perry Manor is one of many Care UK care homes hosting an event.
She said: “Care Home Open Day is a brilliant opportunity to showcase everything our home has to offer and the difference care homes can make to residents’ lives and their wellbeing. We understand there are many preconceptions of what life is like a care home, so here at Perry Manor we relish any opportunity to show what it’s really all about.
“We are all really looking forward to this year’s Care Home Open Day and hope the people of Worcester come out to support us in making it a memorable day for all. The residents love having so many smiling faces in the home and we look forward to welcoming the local community through the doors for what is set to be great day for all ages.”
Thousands of care homes nationwide take part in Care Home Open Day each year, welcoming local people and arranging free events and activities which help to create lasting links between care home residents and their local communities.
It also offers the perfect opportunity for anyone considering a career working with older people to come along and see what a modern, well-run care home is really like. There’s a chance to chat informally to team members, meet the manager and find out more about the range of roles on offer.
