Initially I was drawn to care for practical reasons because it offered some flexibility around my child care commitments, but as I’ve moved up through the ranks this has become a real vocation and I was very happy to become manager of Sunningdale Court in July 2010.
It is a privilege and a great responsibility to care for a person at any stage of their life and I’m conscious of the fact that families want their relatives to enjoy the best environment possible, so that’s exactly what we aim to provide here. Everything we do is about providing a safe setting for residents, one in which families are welcome, residents feel comfortable and can enjoy life in any way they like.
Our team here has worked hard to create a really friendly atmosphere. We build strong relationships with all residents, to find out about their personalities, life stories and how they like to spend their time. This allows us to accommodate people’s wishes, whether that’s taking part in activities, relaxing in the lounge or enjoying our garden.
We always have something going on and our activities coordinator comes up with lots of interesting new events which keep people entertained. One of the best was a Chinese themed evening – a great day for all staff and residents – and we also had a fantastic Summer Fair, which has definitely been the highlight of the year so far.
I’m proud of what we’ve achieved here already, but we’re always coming up with new ideas to make Sunningdale Court better, such as bringing in new carpets and soft furnishings throughout the home. We are also developing an exceptional palliative care service and I see it as crucial that we give people the best possible quality of life no matter what challenges they face.
